A unique instrumentarium
The musical instruments we create are the means by which we do sound and music research and creation, the core of Productions Totem Contemporain’s mission. Totem Instruments are the core of our vision, or our works. All new instruments are acoustic, developed and created with love and passion for raw material and sound matters.
Since 1998, Jean-François Laporte invented over ten instruments, finding rich sound qualities in everyday objects not usually associated with music. Each instrument has a unique sound, usually made either by the movement of air, percussion effects, or material vibrations.
The creative drive behind the design of a new instrument always starts with sound. Trying to create a defined sound, Jean-François Laporte experiments with various objects until he reaches his goal. Over the years, our instruments have been central to more than 100 new works.
