In writing for the Babel Table I found myself thinking about the question of how to write 'new' music for this 'new' instrument… an instrument with an ancient-sounding name and that can remind of an organ, one of our oldest instruments. And so I found myself writing a music that also mixes elements of old and new: a piece (sonata?) in four movements that sometimes recalls music or earlier eras, while also exploring new sonic spaces from the instrument.
Vintage is an apt descriptor for this work: in trying to come up with something all together new, we are often recycling (perhaps even rediscovering?) older musics and hearing them again with 21st century ears… even if the medium is a newly invented instrument.
