The Tu-Yo, despite its minimalist and simple appearance, contains a million expressive possibilities, ranging from variations in tone, intensity, and register. And that's what instantly seduced me. In this piece, I attempted to immerse the performer in a state of flight and explore the interaction between the performer, the instrument, and the tape, in a game of exchange where unpredictability meets expressiveness.
Why "Run"? The emotional state felt during the flight from something or someone often translates into a surge of adrenaline that immediately confronts the individual with time. It's this uncontrollable and powerful intensity felt in the body that resonated perfectly with the instrument I chose to compose this piece: the Tu-Yo. By choosing this instrument, I wanted to anchor the foundations of the piece in this emotional and physical experience to explore its multiple facets in the face of a temporal exchange with the soundtrack.
My goal in this piece was to foster the interrelationship between the performer (Jean-François Laporte), the instrument, and the tape by creating a temporal framework defined by a partition that was sufficiently free to support and accompany the performer as a playmate.
The sounds in the tape were created from recordings I made of the instrument and processed to mold the desired energies into the exploration of the various timbres of the Tu-Yo.
Thanks to the performer Jean-François Laporte for his wonderful interpretation and open-mindedness, as well as Diego Bermudez Chamberland for their support throughout the creation process. Finally, I want to thank all the team members who participated in the production of this audiovisual capture, Antoine Lussier for mastering, and to finish, a small grateful thought to all the membranes that were broken for the realization of this project.
